Dysport is a non-surgical injectable treatment for moderate to severe frown lines and wrinkles. It is a muscle relaxer, so it works in a similar manner to botox, and is therefore beneficial in dealing with problem areas in the upper half of the face. Dysport provides a dramatic yet natural-looking improvement to the facial features.
What is Dysport?
Like botox, Dysport is derived from botulinum toxin type A. It was developed and widely used in Europe before receiving FDA approval in 2009. It treats specific facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, which are the lines created by the animation of these muscles.
Dysport is most often used to treat the following areas:
- Lines across the forehead
- Creases or furrows between the eyebrows
- Wrinkles on the side of the eyes (crow’s feet).
How does Dysport work?
Treatment involves the administering of very low doses of Dysport with the use of a very tiny needle. The product is injected directly into the muscles, and since it weakens the muscles, there is less pull or tension on the skin. This allows the wrinkles to soften over time.
Treatment time is 10 minutes on average, and there is no downtime. The results can be seen within 2 to 7 days, and last for about 4-7 months. After this time follow-up treatments will be required. However, when more treatments are done, the results tend to last longer each time.
What type of results can you expect?
Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals Inc, the makers of Dysport have said that in clinical tests carried out prior to approval, 95% of participants experienced an improvement in the appearance of frown lines and wrinkles.
When using Dysport the goal is not to radically alter the appearance, but rather to create a natural look.
Dysport is indicated for use in adult patients under the age of 65years.
