Collagen makes up most of your skin’s structure and support, but levels decline as you age. This collagen loss makes the thin skin around your eyes even thinner, leading to concerns like drooping upper eyelids, puffy undereye bags, and wrinkles. Blepharoplasty surgery effectively rejuvenates your eyes, restoring your alert, confident look.

What is Blepharoplasty Surgery?

Because the eye area is so vulnerable to the effects of aging, wrinkles and drooping can appear here earlier than other parts of your face. Blepharoplasty surgery, often called eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, is performed on the upper or lower lids to correct signs of aging and give the eyes a brighter, more open appearance. Although it treats a small area, this procedure can refresh your entire face.

How Long Does Blepharoplasty Surgery Take?

Upper or lower blepharoplasty surgery is usually performed with light sedation and local anesthesia, keeping you relaxed and comfortable. While each procedure differs in detail, an upper eyelid lift usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, while a lower eyelid lift may take a bit longer. The overall procedure will take longer if you have your upper and lower lids treated or if you combine your blepharoplasty with other procedures. Because of the sedation, you will need someone to drive you home.

What is Recovery Like After Eyelid Surgery?

People with low-activity jobs can usually return to work two or three days after blepharoplasty surgery. You will still have some swelling in the area, most of which will resolve within the first week. Bruising and swelling are typically gone within about two weeks. During the first week after your procedure, avoid lifting anything heavier than 20 pounds and bending over more than necessary. Your surgeon will clear you to resume your exercise routine and heavy lifting when you are fully healed.

Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery continues to grow in popularity, and most healthy adults can enjoy the benefits. Good candidates for blepharoplasty may want to address a variety of concerns around the upper or lower eyelids. They should have reasonable expectations and be prepared to take the necessary time to recover. People with certain medical conditions may not be eligible for blepharoplasty.

Do I Need an Eyelid Lift or a Brow Lift?

Blepharoplasty can be combined with many other surgical or non-surgical procedures to achieve the best results. If people have concerns about drooping brows, forehead creases, or skin laxity, they often have a brow lift with their eyelid surgery. One sign that you may benefit from a brow lift is a heavy or hooded look to the skin over the eyes. Your surgeon will design a surgical treatment plan that addresses your unique concerns.
