What is Liposuction?

Using a cannula inserted under the skin through an incision, liposuction breaks up and suctions out the fat. It works in almost any part of the body where fat can accumulate and be hard to remove, from the abdomen and thighs to the submental area under the chin. While liposuction works well to remove fat, it also requires a general anesthetic, and it leaves significant bruising. Fortunately, patients have other options.

What Types of Liposuction are Available?

Traditional Liposuction

Most liposuction performed still uses this technique. While it works, it does present some concerns. The need for anesthesia introduces some level of risk, and traditional liposuction is quite invasive, breaking fat cells up. Recovery can also present a challenge, with several weeks of heavy bruising and significant discomfort.

How Painful is Liposuction?

Liposuction isn’t particularly painful, as you’ll most likely be under general anesthesia for the procedure. However, you may feel a considerable amount of discomfort after you wake up from your surgery. This pain usually subsides after about two to three days, but you may need prescription pain medication from your plastic surgeon to feel more comfortable.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from Liposuction?

While every patient is different, most patients can expect to return to work after about one week of recovery. Full recovery from liposuction surgery takes about three to four weeks; at this milestone, patients are usually cleared to return to their normal activities.

How Long is Recovery From Liposuction?

Have you been interested in learning more about liposuction, but nervous about what recovery entails?

You’re not alone. Liposuction has earned a slightly negative reputation over recent years, thanks to the manual processes involved in breaking up and removing fat. Traditionally, liposuction recovery would take several weeks, in which post-op patients would have to contend with hefty amounts of swelling and bruising. View Gallery

But liposuction has changed over recent years – and now, thanks to SmartLipo, liposuction recovery is surprisingly fast.

How Does SmartLipo Work?

Before we dive into how long it takes to recover from SmartLipo, it’s important to understand just why this liposuction method has sped up recovery time.

SmartLipo (also known as laser liposuction) uses laser heat energy to liquefy fat cells in the targeted treatment area. The heat is delivered via the cannula, which is fed to the treatment area through a tiny incision. Once the fat is liquefied, it’s drained via the cannula, resulting in less catastrophic fat removal. The entire procedure can be performed under local anesthesia, thus reducing any risks normally associated with general anesthesia. View Gallery
