Dreaming about life after a facelift is fun and exciting until you start worrying about what recovery could look like. Recovery from a facelift may seem daunting or complicated, but it might be easier than you expect.

What is a Facelift?

With time and other factors such as weight loss and sun damage, the skin begins to lose its elasticity, leading to wrinkled, sagging, or loose skin. A facelift aims to remedy this by repositioning the deeper muscular and fascial layers of the face to a more youthful position, along with the removal of excess skin. The result of a facelift is a rejuvenated and more youthful appearance.

How Long Does it Take to Recover From a Facelift?

Several factors can impact facelift recovery time, including the type of facelift an individual receives and their overall health. Initial bruising and swelling will last a couple of weeks, but it may take two to three months to feel completely normal after a facelift. Once the swelling subsides, you will be able to see the rejuvenated and transformed you.

A key component of facelift recovery is rest, and we encourage our patients to take time off work. Most patients can expect to return to work after the first week of recovery and are usually able to wear makeup around the tenth day.

Patients can also typically return to their regular exercise routine three to four weeks after recovery.

When Should I Get a Facelift?

The best time for patients to get a facelift varies but is generally around their 40s, 50s, and 60s. Many patients like to have a facelift done in their 40s to correct early signs of aging and act as a preventative measure. You may want to consider getting a facelift if you have significant sagging, wrinkles, or sun damage and are interested in restoring your youthful appearance.

How Long Do Facelift Results Last?

Currently, there are no permanent solutions to correct or prevent signs of aging. As time passes, your skin will continue to lose its elasticity and experience the effects of the aging process. However, facelifts will alter the trajectory of your aging, and once signs of aging begin to return, you will still always look younger than if you never had a facelift. Full facelifts provide long-lasting results for up to ten years, while the results of a mini facelift can last up to five years. To help extend the life of your facelift, you should moisturize daily, practice diligent sun protection and eat a balanced diet.

If you find that your results have faded or are not happy with them and would like to refresh them, you may be a good candidate for a revision facelift. Revision facelifts can be done six months after an initial facelift, but the timeframe will ultimately depend on your practitioner’s recommendation.
